Maths Learning Walk
Mrs Diwan, the Maths Lead at Beechfield, and the Maths Leads from Cherry Tree and Laurance Haines looked at Maths throughout the school.
Mrs Diwan was very proud to report the things below:
-
The children absolutely love maths! They were eager to talk about counting on, adding and subtracting, using dienes, part-part-whole, bar models, tens and ones grid, etc.
-
The classroom environment was calm and focused, contributing to a positive learning atmosphere.
-
I was impressed by how children as young as six were confidently measuring objects with rulers, showing precision and confidence.
-
When faced with challenges, the children mentioned they simply persevered – a wonderful mindset towards learning.
-
Girls showed the same level of confidence as boys, challenging the common belief that boys are better at maths.
-
In Year 4, children displayed impressive reasoning skills and a deep understanding of maths concepts.
-
Choral repetition of sentence steps in Year 4 was a glimpse of mastery in practice, with strong number fluency.
-
The presentation in the children’s books reflected ample time given for independent work, showing focus and thoughtfulness.
-
The overall atmosphere in the lessons was calm, focused, and purposeful.
-
The child-initiated activities in the nursery were engaging, with all children actively involved and hooked on the tasks.
-
The worksheets stuck in the books clearly demonstrated that teachers are thoughtfully considering the needs of their class and customising the sheets, rather than simply downloading them from a website.
